Ex-SABMiller Africa CEO,
Mark Bowman, joins Truman & Orange Board

Truman & Orange are excited to announce that the latest member to join the company’s management team is none other than respected liquor industry veteran, Mark Bowman, who brings with him a wealth of liquor industry experience.

Having spent most of his illustrious career in various leadership positions at the then SABMiller, Mark is credited with managing ABI (the listed soft drinks division of SAB) in South Africa when it listed, an doubling its share price while it was under his management. In Poland, Mark was MD for Kompania Piwowarska – a successful part of the SABMiller’s Central and Eastern Europe business – where he took the business to market leadership.

From 2007 until his departure in late 2016, Mark led SABMiller Africa (which later included South Africa) where he grew earnings by double digits over the period he was at the helm. With presence in 18 African markets, a staff complement of over 22 000 people, and a partnership with the Castel Group in francophone Africa (a further 21 markets), Mark helped build a total African business of over $10bn in revenue and represented a third of the group’s global earnings.

We believe Mark’s unparalleled experience, coupled to our unique style of brand-building and rapidly-growing portfolio of Discovery brands will help us accelerate our growth, grow our market share and cement our status in an industry of Goliaths, as a ‘David’ to be reckoned with.

When asked what attracted him to joining Truman & Orange’s board, Mark explains, “Rowan and his team really understand how to build brands. You get branded companies that develop their own products and take them to the market and then you get distribution companies that manage and sell agency brands. Truman & Orange is an agency that also understands how to build brands, one bottle at a time. The company is highly differentiated in that regard. Secondly, Truman & Orange have chosen niche positions as opposed to the big liquor industry players. They’ve carefully selected the brands they want to work with and they are highly agile, quick and responsive to issues.”

Another Afro-optimist to join the team, Mark believes strongly in the potential of Africa and the role of business in helping to develop the full potential of the continent. He will be working in an advisory position to help us realise our ambition of becoming a major player in the SA Liquor industry and in shaping its future.
